Understanding Common Problems of St. Augustine Turf Lawns in Florida

Writer's picture: Jon StoddardJon Stoddard

As an entomologist with Imperial Pest Prevention, I have seen firsthand the unique challenges homeowners and landscapers face in maintaining healthy St. Augustine turf lawns in Florida. While this grass species is well-suited to the region’s climate, it is not without its vulnerabilities. Here, I will delve into the common problems affecting St. Augustine turf, emphasizing pest-related issues and offer insights into effective management practices.

Chinch Bugs (Blissus insularis)

Adult Chinch Bug on a plant

Chinch bugs are among the most destructive pests of St. Augustine grass in Florida. These tiny insects feed on the grass's sap, causing extensive damage that often begins with yellowing and progresses to large dead patches.

Identification and Life Cycle: Adult chinch bugs are about 1/6 inch long, with black bodies and white wings. The nymphs are red with a white band across their back. Chinch bugs thrive in hot, dry conditions and are most active in summer.

Damage Symptoms: Initial signs include irregular yellow patches that eventually turn brown and die. These patches often start in sunny areas or near concrete, which retains heat.

Management:

  • Cultural Control: Maintain proper mowing height (around 3-4 inches) and avoid over-fertilization, creating an ideal environment for chinch bugs.

  • Biological Control: Encourage natural predators such as big-eyed and minute pirate bugs.

  • Chemical Control: If there is a severe infestation, use insecticides labeled explicitly for chinch bug control. Rotate insecticides to prevent resistance development.

Sod Webworms (Herpetogramma phaeopteralis)

Sod webworms are the larvae of small moths and are another common pest in St. Augustine grass. These caterpillars feed on the grass blades, leading to significant defoliation.

Identification and Life Cycle: Adult moths are small, brown, and nocturnal. They lay eggs on grass blades, which hatch into larvae within a week. The larvae are greenish-brown with dark spots and can grow up to an inch long.

Damage Symptoms: Look for patches of grass that appear scalped or have chewed blades. The damage is often most noticeable in the evening or early morning when the larvae are most active.

Management:

  • Cultural Control: Regular mowing and dethatching can help reduce the habitat for larvae.

  • Biological Control: Beneficial nematodes and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are effective biological treatments.

  • Chemical Control: Apply insecticides in the late afternoon or early evening when larvae feed. Ensure thorough coverage to penetrate the thatch layer where larvae reside.

Gray Leaf Spot (Pyricularia grisea)

leaf spot fungus on a blade of St. Augustine Grass

Gray leaf spot is a fungal disease that thrives in warm, humid conditions. It affects the foliage of St. Augustine grass, leading to reduced photosynthesis and vigor.

Identification and Life Cycle: The fungus produces spores that are spread by wind, water, and mechanical means. Infected grass blades develop small, oval spots that are gray or brown with a dark border.

Damage Symptoms: Spots on the leaves coalesce, causing large areas of dead tissue. Severely affected lawns may appear thin and sparse.

Management:

  • Cultural Control: Reduce nitrogen fertilization during peak disease periods (late spring through early fall). Reduce shade and thatch to improve air circulation.

  • Chemical Control: Fungicides, particularly those containing azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, or propiconazole, can be effective. Apply them preventatively or at the first sign of disease.

Take-All Root Rot (Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis)

Take-all root rot is a soil-borne fungal disease that attacks St. Augustine grass's roots, stolons, and rhizomes, often exacerbated by drought or poor soil fertility.

Identification and Life Cycle: The fungus persists in the soil and infects the grassroots, impeding water and nutrient uptake. The disease is most active in spring and fall when soil temperatures are moderate.

Damage Symptoms: Look for irregular, yellow patches that eventually turn brown and die. The roots of affected plants are dark and rotted.

Management:

  • Cultural Control: Maintain balanced soil pH (5.5 to 6.5) and avoid excessive nitrogen applications. Improve drainage and reduce soil compaction.

  • Chemical Control: Apply fungicides containing azoxystrobin or thiophanate-methyl as a preventative treatment.
